RP seeks world record for longest canvas painting
MANILA, Philippines - The fight against climate change continues as the country's responsible commission employs a new and creative way: visual arts.
The Climate Change Commission is set to unveil in Batangas on Monday a 7,000-meter mural canvas to raise awareness on global warming.
“Global warming and climate change concern us all and public information on mitigation and adaptation is our best weapon. The Arts is a vivid educational tool to raise a carbon-cutting consciousness. Let us join hands in this battle against climate change,” Climate Change Vice Chair and Secretary Heherson Alvarez said in a press release.
The mural will be "focusing on water and fishes," Heherson said, not divulging more to prevent preempting the unveiling.
Around 6,000 artists of various ages contributed to the mural, which was inspired by the United Nations Environment Protection theme of "Biodiversity is Life... Biodiversity is Our Life" for the World Environment Day and Climate Change Teach-in Day.
The mural is expected to set a new World Record as it is expected to surpass the recorded 6,001.5-meter mural in Mexico, which was unveiled in May 2010.
The mural unveiling event is organized by the On-The-Spot Artists of the Philippines headed by award-winning scenographer Rollie de Leon.
The celebration includes a 3-day Youth Fusion Workshop on Heritage and Habitat from representatives of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Youth participants from Singapore, Laos, Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand, Brunei, Myanmar, Malaysia, Vietnam, and the Philippines will assemble in Batangas for the workshop.
