MANILA – It’s official: the hit musical “Miss Saigon” will return to London’s West End next year.

British theatrical producer Cameron Mackintosh recently announced that “Miss Saigon” will be shown at the Prince Edward Theatre starting on May 2014.

“I find it hard to believe that it is already 25 years since I first premiered 'Miss Saigon' in London, where it became the greatest success ever in the long history of the Drury Lane Theater and went on to be a phenomenal success around the world,” Mackintosh said in a press release published on the “Miss Saigon” website.

He added that “the new production has taken a more gritty and realistic approach to the design than the operatic original but still delivers the power and epic sweep of Boublil and Schonberg’s great score.”

The revival of “Miss Saigon” will be directed by Laurence Connor, with musical staging by Bob Avian and additional choreography by Geoffrey Garratt. Totie Driver and Matt Kinley will be in charge of the production design from an original concept by Adrian Vaux, while Andreane Neofitou will take care of the cast members’ costumes.

Tickets will go on sale starting September 9.

Set in 1975 during the final days of the Vietnam War, “Miss Saigon” tells the love story of a hardened bar girl named Kim and Chris, an American GI.

Kim was originally played by Filipina singer Lea Salonga.

Auditions for “Miss Saigon” were held in the Philippines late last year, with only six female hopefuls asked to stay until the very end. They are former Kapamilya singer Rachelle Ann Go, theater actresses Tanya Manalang and Apple Chiu, singer-actress Frencheska Farr, Emerald Bañares and Mary Jane Solomon.

The cast members of the revival of “Miss Saigon” have yet to be announced, but a number of Filipinos took to the Internet to express their support for Go, hoping that she will get to play the role of Kim in the musical in its 25th year.

“Hoping and praying that Rachelle Ann Go from the Philippines will bag the role… saw her in Little Mermaid and Tarzan musicals, great voice and awesome acting… such a great and versatile singer-actress,” user Reynaldo Agor commented on the teaser video of “Miss Saigon” uploaded on YouTube.

“Praying for Rachelle Ann Go (Philippines) to be the new Kim,” said user archelle18.
