MANILA - A presidential "boob job," which has become the talk of the town, has sparked public interest in the popular and expensive procedure.
Dr. Laurence Loh of the Philippine Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (PAPRAS) revealed that breast implant procedures rank 2nd on the Top 5 most popular surgical procedures performed for Filipino patients.
Loh, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon, explained that "breast implantation" is the process by which a foreign object like silicone is inserted into the breast.
The procedure is done either for cosmetic purposes, where a patient wants to boost bosom size, or for reconstructive purposes, like if a breast cancer patient who had undergone surgery wants to have her breast replaced.
Loh said that silicone gel implants are inert substances which rarely react to the body. Each silicone implant can last from 10 to 15 years or a whole lifetime, if it is properly implanted. Another variety includes saline solution-filled implants.
He stressed that the procedure should only be performed by qualified doctors since botched breast implantation procedures are risky. Improper procedures can result in painful "capsular contractures" or the hardening of the breast tissue, among others.
Loh said cosmetic breast implantation procedures cost from P100,000 to P180,000, while reconstructive breast implantation procedures cost more than P200,000. Report from Sol Aragones, ABS-CBN News.
