Team Manila hopes to make Dolphy t-shirts
Design studio to create Miriam, Revilla collections
MANILA, Philippines – Team Manila Graphics Design Studio, known for its modern take on Filipino icons such as national hero Jose Rizal, would like to create a collection of apparel and accessories inspired by the King of Philippine Comedy Dolphy.
But Jowee Alviar, co-founder and creative director of Team Manila, said on Wednesday they would have to first get permission from the Quizon family.
“We want to do a Dolphy tribute, pero ‘di ko alam kung sino ang may hawak ng licensing ni Dolphy. We’d want to ask the family first,” he told ABS-CBNnews.com when asked if Team Manila was planning a tribute for the veteran comedian, who passed away on July 10.
“We also wanted to do a collection because Dolphy symbolizes the resilience of the Filipino, na kaya niya pa ring tumawa sa kabila ng hirap,” Alviar said.
What is definite is that Team Manila will soon release items inspired by Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago and action star and former senator Ramon Revilla Sr.
Alviar said the new designs will feature Santiago’s signature pick-up lines, among many others.
A photo shoot with the feisty senator will be held sometime next month.
“These will be designed in a modern way,” Alviar said. “We may release them late next month.”
Santiago has often made the news for her candid comments on various issues, from the Chinese government to the controversial reproductive health (RH) bill.
Alviar hopes that their new collection will show the senator’s “other side.”
Meanwhile, another collection of apparel and accessories featuring Revilla is slated for release either late this year or before the former actor’s birthday in March 2013.
“We’ve already talked with Mr. Revilla’s family about this,” Alviar said. “With this (collection), we aim to celebrate the Filipino ‘macho,’ and an example of this is Revilla Sr.”
Revilla, the father of actor and senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr., is known for his “macho” image, as shown by his numerous children with several women.
Founded in 2001, Team Manila became popular among the youth for its t-shirts printed with a fresh perspective on Filipino icons, traditions and beliefs.
Recently, the design studio teamed up with the Department of Tourism to create digital posters of the country’s tourist attractions.
