Casiño hits high prices with SONA barong
MANILA, Philippines – The annual State of the Nation Address (SONA) of any Philippine president will not be complete without politicians wearing fashionable statement pieces.
Bayan Muna Partylist Rep. Teddy Casiño will continue this tradition on Monday by wearing a barong Tagalog criticizing the high prices of utilities and basic commodities during President Benigno Aquino III’s third SONA.
Known for wearing clothes that reflect the measures he is pushing for, Casiño’s revealed that his barong was made by fashion designer Edgar San Diego with hand-painted prints made by visual artists Renan Ortiz and Federico ‘Boy ‘ Dominguez.
Ortiz and Dominguez reportedly used “letras y figuras,” an old Filipino art form that uses the shape of human figures, plants and common objects to form letters.
Casiño’s barong will bear the words "Presyo Ibaba."
“I believe fashion and art should not only cater to the whims and caprices of the rich but can also be a means to express the aspirations of the common folk,” Casiño said.
Two years ago, Casiño showed up in a barong Tagalog with the words “Stop the Killings in the Philippines.”
In 2011, Casiño wore a barong calling for the passage of the Freedom of Information Bill.
