6 kids to play Pinocchio in Rep musical
MANILA – Six young actors are set to take on the role of the beloved wooden puppet as Repertory Philippines’ “Pinocchio” opens at Greenbelt’s Onstage Theater on August 13.
Based on the classic novel for children by Carlo Collodi, “Pinocchio” was adapted for the stage by Jim Eiler and directed by Joy Virata.
“Each Pinocchio we’ve chosen from a pool of 18 auditionees brings an endearingly unique touch of their own personality to the title character,” Virata said. “Children are often challenging to work with, but these kids are delightfully brilliant and professional.”
The youngest of the six thespians tapped to play the role of Pinocchio is Albert Silos, whose previous roles include one of the royal children in “The King and I” at Resorts World Manila and the young prince in “Ang Prinsipe at ang Pulubi” at Gantimpala Theater.
Two girls are also playing the little puppet boy in the musical – 11-year-old Sofia Wong and 10-year-old Andee Achacoso. Wong, whose dream role is Eponine of “Les Miserables,” has been part of the musicals by Chancel for the past four years.
Achacoso, meanwhile, marks her debut in professional theater via “Pinocchio,” although she has been part of Project Thank You World produced by Jim Paredes.
The three other young actors include 10-year-old Daniel Drilon (“Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”), Guido Gatmaytan (“Priscilla: Queen of the Desert” and Trumpets’ “Bluebird of Happiness) and Noel Comia Jr. (“Aladdin and the Magic Lamp” and “Jack and the Beanstalk”).
Other actors who are part of the cast of “Pinocchio” include Oliver Usison, Stephen Hotchkiss and Jeffrey Flores, among others.
“It’s a feel-good musical that everybody from all walks of life will enjoy,” said Usison, who plays the role of the toy maker Gepetto. “It’s such a beautiful musical that is worthy to be done over and over again.”
Repertory Philippines’ “Pinocchio” will run until December 14, with tickets available at TicketWorld.
