8 things to do this weekend: August 15-17

MANILA - Looking for something new to do this weekend?

Here are 8 activities -- ranging from exhibitions of local art, modern stage adaptations of beloved classics, to something as simple as free pizza -- to help take your mind off the thought of another busy work week ahead.

1. Filipina flutist to perform in in Manila

Italy-based young Filipino flutist Sarah Mae Gabuyo will be performing in Manila for a one-night-only concert, as part of the Cultural Center of the Philippines' Special Concert Series.

To be held at the Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino at the CCP, the concert will have Gabuyo perform classics such as Bach’s Aria Aus Liebe from St. Matthew’s Passion, Mozart’s Sonata in C Major, K.296, and Krakamp’s Fantasy variations of themes from G. Donizetti’s opera Linda di Chamounix, among others.

Gabuyo has a bachelor's degree in Flute Performance, and is currently prusuing a Master's degree with her mentor, international flute soloist Raffaele Trevisani.

Those who will miss the concert can get a chance to see Gabuyo when she holds piano masterclasses on August 16 at the same venue from 1 pm to 5 pm.

2. FEU Auditorium turning 65

Far Eatern University, as part of its year-long celebration of its historical Auditorium's 65th anniversary, will be staging "Colonial," a one-man dance-theater production featuring Alvin Tolentino from Vancouver, Canada.

Directed by Dennis Gupa, "Colonial" is a multi-media dance-theater piece that tells the story of a society faced with the journeys, struggles, fights, fears and conditions of a colonized life.

3. Celebrate National Pizza Day with CPK

California Pizza Kitchen is celebrating National Pizza Day by giving out one free pizza for each one you order.

4. Mind Museum to test your science trivia muscles

Do you think you know your science? Mind Museum is hosting a science-themed quiz dubbed "Mind Pub" for adults. Form a group of six and get ready to flex those trivia muscles as questions range from pop culture to current events -- with a "science twist."

5. Pinocchio to come alive onstage

In celebration of its 22 years of producing well-loved musicals for children of all ages, Repertory Philippines Theater for Young Audiences has announced the staging of "PINOCCHIO" -- the classic tale of a wooden puppet whose nose grew when he told a lie.

Playwright Carlo Collodi will be penning the modern adaption, which will be matched with musical scoring from Jim Eiler and Jeanne Bargy.

It will star Albert Silos, Noel Comia, Daniel Drilon, Guido Gatmaytan, Sofie Wong and Andee Achacoso as Pinocchio; Oliver Usison and Nic Campos as Gepetto; Liesl Batucan, Christine Flores and Cara Barredo as the Blue Fairy; and Steven Conde and Steven Hotchkiss will play the lead villain Signore Volpone.

6. Local artists to hold day-long bazaar in Escolta

It's that time of the month again when local artists gather at the once-famous Escolta Street in Binondo, Manila for a day-long bazaar dubbed "Saturday X Future Market."

This month's market will feature around 50 booths -- from those that sell independently published books to unique artworks, in an attempt to recapture the "lost glory of the once bustling neighborhood."

7. "Little Prince" gets Filipino adaptation

Playwright Joaquin Cerdas is staging a Filipino adaptation of the classic novella "The Little Prince." The play titled "Ang Prinsipito," which is set to debut this month, is written especially for children.

It will feature musical scoring by JP Del Mundo from the band Never The Strangers, and direction from Jay Crisostomo of "Ikarus" fame. It will star Rolando Inocencio and Andrew Cruz as Piloto, Moreen Guese and Jewel Yu as Prinsipito, Duane Ligot as Soro, and Meyanne Plamenio as Rosas.

8. Andy Warhol framed at Art Underground

Contemporary artist Aileen Lanuza is holding an exhibit inspired by the late iconic artist Andy Warhol dubbed "Who Framed Andy Warhol."

It features the traditional image of Maria Clara juxtaposed with Warhol himself, along with some of Hollywood's other film stars and iconic animated characters.

The weekend-long exhibit follows Lanuza's critically acclaimed exhibit 2013 exhibit "The Interrogation of Maria Clara."
