4 Pinoy girls bag medals in China math contest
MANILA -- Four young Filipino students won medals in the recent 2013 China Girls' Mathematics Olympiad (CGMO) held in Zhejiang, China.
Bagging bronze medals for the Philippines are Ma. Czarina Angela Lao and Isabella Mae Tan of St. Jude Catholic School in Manila, and Kelsey Lim Tiong Soon and Kaye Janelle Yao of Grace Christian College in Quezon City.
The Philippine team also won first place in dance aerobics and second place in the 1000-piece puzzle solving contest, which are side events of the contest.
In the 2012 CGMO, Lao won a silver, and Lim Tiong Soon and two other team members won bronze medals.
"This is the second year in a row that all our Filipino contestants won medals in the CGMO," Dr. Simon Chua, president of the Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines (MTG) said in a statement, adding that the CGMO is one of the toughest math contests in Asia.
The four girls said the questions in this year's contest were harder than in 2012.
About 150 students joined the 2013 CGMO from Russia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau, the Philippines and different parts of China including Beijing, Shanghai, Hunan, Sichuan and Guangdong.
The new feat of Filipinos followed the country' recent triumphs in international math competitions.
In the International Mathematics Contest (IMC) in Singapore held earlier this month, the Philippines topped the contest for the first time with 161 medals consisting of 23 gold, 45 silver and 93 bronze, and edged out math powerhouse China, which took home 153 medals.
Last month, Filipino students won one silver, five bronze medals and a merit award in the 10th China Southeast Mathematical Olympiad held in Jiangxi province, China.
In the 16th Po Leung Kuk Primary Mathematics World Contest held in Hong Kong, the country won two silver and six bronze medals in the individual contest, and second runner-up and a merit award in the team contest.
Filipino students also won 401 medals, consisting of 66 gold, 157 silver and 178 bronze medals in the Environmental Math Competition 2013, King of Math 2013 and Asia Cup Math Olympiad held in Hong Kong.
The Philippines were also overall champions in the elementary division, and bagged five gold, seven silver, 10 bronze and eight merit awards and five first-place trophies in the 2013 Bulgaria International Mathematics Competition held in Burgas, Bulgaria, from June 30 to July 5.
