MANILA, Philippines - Twenty-seven years after Senator Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr. was assassinated on an airport tarmac, his son Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III is now the President of the country. Groups loyal to the Aquino family are spearheading events on Saturday, August 21, to commemorate the late Senator's death anniversary.

The Yellow Ribbon Movement (YRM), together with the Spirit of EDSA Foundation and EDSA People Power Commission, has organized a flag-raising ceremony on Saturday at 7:45 a.m. at the People Power Monument on EDSA corner White Plains Avenue in Quezon City.

Renowned "Tenor ng Bayan" Nolyn Cabahug was tapped to sing the National Anthem.

This will be followed by the Pledge to the Flag, and then the "Panata sa Pagbabago", a list of simple acts everyone can do toward achieving moral transformation.

At 8:15 a.m., there will be a wreath laying ceremony, followed by an ecumenical prayer.

A Eucharistic celebration is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. with the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) Choir providing the music.

Expected to attend are several key personalities who figured in the struggle for the restoration of democracy during the Marcos years. The public is likewise invited to attend.

A medical-dental mission for adults and children will be held, sponsored by the PCSO.

YRM will also distribute "Kasama Ako sa Pagbabago" car stickers and Panata sa Pagbabago leaflets.

Button pins and other memorabilia will also be made available.

A limited number of potted yellow plants will also be given away for free.

Decades have passed - leaders

Decades have passed - leaders changed - two democratic icons perished politically and naturally and today a new dawn of hope personifies through Pnoy. People continues to “remember”, showers confetti and tied yellow ribbons, gathering for liturgical masses and demonstrating presence, reminiscing what they could remember and had contributed?(really with a question – will be discussing later). But with so many sacrifices from these ICONS, as Filipinos where are we now? Both of the figures believed in us and even categorically stated that his countrymen are worth dying for – maybe he is right or he could be wrong (his heroism is of no doubt – but us?). We never stop complaining of government’s corruption but are we not the government (putting aside the technical meaning of democracy – let’s put it this way like a coffee from the jar to the cup where we sip). Assume and only assume that all the present cabinet members are from private sector – they were considered as the “ordinary people” as they wanted to be called prior to their assignment. Now the million or even billion dollar question - can they honestly help the present government by being different from their predecessor – will they not be corrupt, can they resist corruption or let’s even say can they minimize corruption by 50% from the former figures – if yes we still have hope as a country.
We are always united? (again with a question) in political propagandas(positive one), celebrating or commemorating events for these icons, or again we say - EDSA. But what is unity without conviction and what is conviction without action, have we also converted it into peace and to national prosperity – sadly millions are even getting hungrier each year and we continue to brag that we are among the world’s best in every endeavor, from boxing, singing, inventing and from other renowned personalities around the world who happened to be of our descent but not actually of any local influenced. They are the one glittering in the shore and we capitalize on them, we forget to improve ourselves in every aspect, we always expect others to change for us, we always expect an angel will come down and rescue us – but this will never happen. The country will change if we change (I am only dreaming do not worry). Our benevolent leaders continue to praise Filipinos of being honest, hardworking and other values which can turn into their favor (votes) not even reminding that we are already sagging on those issues. On the recent State of the Nation Address Pnoy tries to go out from this norm but with a caution or he might be out of his seat after that day. He addresses MWSS bonuses and perks and of course cannot expose the Congress and the Senates pie. This is how difficult for our nation to prosper, good leaders can only survives by juggling. We can now start dreaming – yes indeed but we may be continuing dreaming if we cannot help Pnoy. He may not as strong or as intellectual as his father, but look the honesty in his eyes (God Help Him). He is our last hope – after him we will again be day dreaming.
