Memorial services set for Behn Cervantes
MANILA – Friends and supporters of Behn Cervantes are welcome to attend any of the memorial services for the late stage actor and director, with the first set to be held today.
Cervantes’s brother, Tony, said in a text message to ABS-CBNnews.com on Sunday that all the memorial services will be held at the Church of the Risen Lord at the University of the Philippines Diliman campus in Quezon City.
He said Upsilon and Sigma Delta are scheduled to hold memorial services at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. service on Monday (August 19), followed by the UP Alumni Association at 7 p.m. on Tuesday (August 20), and by the Concerned Artists of the Philippines at 6 p.m. on Wednesday (August 21).
The Cervantes family will be attending the memorial services, Tony added.
The artist-activist passed away at 10:15 a.m. last Thursday, August 15, due to pneumonia with diabetes complications. He was 74.
Hours after Cervantes’s death, Tony told ABS-CBNnews.com that his brother “wanted no wake.” Per his wish, the stage actor-director’s remains were cremated.
Last June, Cervantes was honored by the UP Alumni Association with its prized Lifetime Achievement Award for his service as a teacher, actor, director and theater artist.
He was also a recipient of an Aliw award for Life Achievement in Theater, and the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ centennial award.
Some of his memorable portrayals include “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead” and “The Mikado,” while “Guys and Dolls,” “The Short, Short Life of Citizen Juan” and “Iskolar ng Bayan” are some of his best works as a director.
