'Major major:' Venus Raj's legacy?

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) - She may have failed to get the crown, but Venus Raj, the country's representative to this year's Miss Universe pageant, left something for the whole world to remember -- the term "major major."

The expression, apparently made out of nervousness, is currently a hot topic among Internet users across the globe. As of 5:53 p.m., "major major" is the seventh trending topic on Twitter worldwide.

During the Miss Universe question and answer portion, Raj was asked by American actor William Baldwin about the biggest mistake that she made in her life and what she did to make it right.

She replied, "You know what, sir, in my 22 years of existence, I can say that there's nothing major major problem that I've done in my life because I'm very confident with my family, with the love that they are giving to me. So thank you so much that I'm here. Thank you, thank you so much!"

The 5'9" beauty with a 22-inch waistline, who was a crowd favorite even before the pageant, became the fourth runner-up after the question and answer portion.

It was Mexico's Jimena Navarrete who was proclaimed Miss Universe 2010.

At the time when the pageant was aired live on television, Raj was the top trending topic on Twitter. As of this writing, she went down to third place.

Word of the Year?

Major Major is actually the name of a 4-member indie rock band from Liverpool, United Kingdom.

In the context of Raj's statement, Twitter user Chris Mercado, or xmond, translated "major major" as "bonggang bongga," a term commonly used in gayspeak which means "extravagant" or "outlandish."

"Venus Raj's answer in Filipino: 'Wala po akong naging problema sa buhay ko na bonggang bongga! (major major),'" Mercado said in his Twitter page. The said message has been retweeted by several people, including well-known fashion designer Rajo Laurel.

The term continues to gain popularity as we speak. But the question among netizens is, will it have the same fate as "jejemon," which became the country's "Word of the Year?"

"Jejemon," a term coined by combining the SMS term for laughter and the suffix used in a popular cartoon of trainable monsters, refers to people who deliberately exaggerate ordinary words by adding, subtracting, or mixing letters and numbers in written communication.

It has since been considered a subculture, with other words taking off from its popularity such as the "bekimon," which is defined as a "hard-core user" of gay language.

"Major major to replace jejemon as word of the year! Haha...we love you Venus Raj!" said Twitter user msancelle.

User msYSAY added, "May bago nang statement ang buong Pilipinas. Laos na ang bonggang bongga, ang in ngayon, major major! Go go Venus! Panalo ka! (The Philippines now has a new statement. 'Bonggang bongga' is out, and 'major major' is in. Go go Venus! You're the winner!)"

What should've been said?

Despite the so-called slip-up during the question and answer portion, Raj was highly praised by 2 of the country's Miss Universe beauties.

Gloria Diaz and Margie Moran, winners of the Miss Universe title in 1969 and 1973, respectively, noted that being in number 5 at a time when the Philippines is under fire because of the hostage-taking incident in the Quirino Grandstand is already a huge feat.

"She was good, she was awesome. Very positive siya (She was very positive) even after yesterday's fiasco," Diaz told ABS-CBN News.

Moran added, "Being number 5 out of 80 is an achievement in itself. It is a time of celebration, and we need it."

The 2 beauty queens, however, noted that Raj could've done better.

Moran, in particular, said that Raj could've cited her struggles in getting a valid Philippine passport as she tried to win back her Binibining Pilipinas title.

Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. earlier stripped her of the crown due to inconsistencies in her birth records.

"She had difficulty going to the States. She should've talked about that," Moran explained.

Nevertheless, Raj said that she is flattered by the increasing popularity of her "major major" remark during the pageant.

In an interview with a local television network, she said in jest, "At least 'yung major major nakapagbigay ng karangalan sa ating bansa. (At least 'major major' brought honor to the country somehow.")

This may, indeed, be the starting point of Raj's road to stardom.

I'm proud to our Ms. Philippines!

All i can say is that i'm proud of Venus where she answered it in English no matter what the consequences.

Sad to accept really that the winner doesn't speak English at all and also very burden to accept that a Grade 1 pupil can speak better English than the crowned Ms. Universe.

The biggest loophole on this event was the TRANSLATOR. A good translator can translate it better. A professional translator can make it a winning ticket.

How come they accept contestants that doesn't speak English where in fact Ms. Universe Pageant is spelled in English???

This is the most darn hilarious pageant ever created in human history.

INTERPRETER INTERPRETER INTERPRETER

English is one of the official languages of the Philippines and most Filipinos are fluent in conversational English BUT our minds and hearts think in Filipino. This is true for most, if not all, Filipinos of every socio-economic class.

Venus Raj does NOT need to know from anyone how she should have answered. Surely, seconds after her stumble she already knew what she should have said. Almost anyone could give an acceptable answer to that question if they were given some time to think. In this case, she was required under heavy pressure to give an instantaneous answer which isn’t an easy task for anyone.

In the 1999 Miss Universe Pageant, Miss Philippines (Miriam Quiambao) also lost her chance at the crown due to her stumbling at her final Q & A. And who knows how many of our representatives could have made the preliminary cut had they been able to satisfactorily answer the interview questions?

Almost any Filipino can smoothly engage in casual conversational English BUT this isn’t casual conversation we are talking about here. It’s a nerve-wracking split-second Q & A under heavy pressure on stage and live telecast worldwide.

Mexico, Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia etc. etc. etc. are among the perennial finalists and ultimate winners of the Miss Universe Pageants. All of them use interpreters. Using an interpreter buys you time. It gives you a few extra seconds to think and more importantly puts you at ease in a comfort zone when you hear the question in your own language. You automatically feel at home.

You are judged on the content of your answer regardless of what language you say it. It’s NOT an English proficiency test.

Venus was robbed of the Miss Universe crown.

If Venus Raj was given the opportunity to use and interpreter, it’s certain that she would have given a totally different answer and Miss Philippines would have been Miss Universe 2010.

Miriam Quiambao, Venus Raj --- --- How many more of our contestants will be denied the crown because of our arrogance and persistence in not allowing them to speak from the heart?

MABUHAY VENUS RAJ !!! MABUHAY PHILIPPINES !!!

I beg to disagree

Allow me to give my point of view. Before the Q&A started it was announced by Bret Michaels, the male Presenter that in some cases the finalists can use their interpreter, meaning that everybody was given the opportunity to use their own interpreter. Moreover, every finalist was given 30 seconds to complete her answer. However, it was obvious that Venus Raj chose to answer on her own without the use or aid of an interpreter and very quickly Venus gave her answer without the benefit of taking a pause. It is a fact that it is in the Filipino veins and blood to show that we have the capability and competence to speak English most especially in this particular prestigious worldwide event.

So, I beg to disagree with the statement of mlSALAS that Venus was robbed of the Miss Universe crown and has not been given the opportunity to use an interpreter. Indeed she has all the opportunity and Venus Raj tried her very, very best, but that’s all the judges could decide based on her answer - Fourth Runner-up. Venues Raj herself admitted that she got nervous in the process. Nonetheless, Long live Venus Raj, long live Philippines. You put our country on top of the world. Kudos to your performance.

OH YES SHE WAS ROBBED !!!

It wasn’t Miss Universe Inc that denied Venus the option to use an interpreter, It was us, the Filipino people and Binibining Pilipinas Inc (Stella Marquez Araneta).
The Philippines has never used and interpreter and look how many Miss Universe crowns we’ve brought home regardless of how many stunningly beautiful and intelligent representatives we send.

Filipino culture ridiculously and illogically equates English proficiency with intelligence. A very disturbing and culturally corrupt attitude.

It’s ironic how our representative wears a national costume (terno) and sash saying “PHILIPPINES” but would bring shame to her countrymen if she let the world hear her talk in Filipino. Is that what’s called Filipino pride???

We are a non-native English speaking country. Our primary language is Filipino.

We need to stop this insanity. We need to make interpreters MANDATORY for all Miss Philippines in the Miss Universe Pageant. Most especially when answering preliminary interviews with judges and final Q&A segments. For all other social and casual purposes, she would not need an interpreter (unless the candidate chooses so herself).

This is the ONLY advantage our competitors have against us and they’ve been beating us for years.
