'Fash' gives new meaning to style
MANILA, Philippines - In 2004, there was "fetch."
The term, introduced in the Mean Girls film which starred Lindsay Lohan, is an expression which refers to a cool or awesome style. To use in a sentence, Gretchen Wieners (Lacey Chabert) said, "That's (bracelet) so fetch."
Fast forward to 2010, we hear model and make-up artist Bianca Valerio refer to persons as well as their clothes and shoes as "fash," apparently a shortened version of the word "fashionable."
She stressed, however, that the term is not your typical style-describing adjective. To her, being "fash" is not only about looking fabulous, but also about embracing your inner beauty and unique tastes.
"Being fash is an expression of self. It's about being fabulous in your own unique way, being who you are and who you want to be," Valerio told abs-cbnNEWS.com.
She continued, "People admire others for their fashion choices, not much for the clothes that they're wearing. It's really about how you wear the clothes."
Coincidentally, the expression is also the name of a new show on the Lifestyle Network where Valerio is one of the hosts.
Called "FASH" -- or Fashion And Style Hub -- the program aims to give Filipinos the know-how to help them set their own fashion trends.
Teaming up with celebrity stylist John Lozano, personal shopper Ram de Vera, hair stylist extraordinaire Borge Aloba and purveyor of style Ferdi Salvador, Valerio promises to make dressing up fun and affordable as they make global fashion trends more relevant to the ordinary Filipino.

She particularly dedicated the show to "people who have been lost, who feel out of place, or feel that they're not good enough," things she claimed to have experienced when she was young.
"Make-up and clothes help you heal and look at yourself with hope, na pwede pala akong gumanda nang bonggang bongga (that I can be even more beautiful than I already am)," Valerio said.
She added, "We'll translate international trends to the local setting and make them more achievable. We're not claiming to be the best, but we sincerely want to help people with what we do."
Can Valerio and her team of experts help Filipinos get to their "fash" selves? We'll soon find out.
FASH -- Fashion and Style Hub premieres this Thursday, August 26, at 10 p.m. on the Lifestyle Network.
