MANILA, Philippines - The unfortunate bus hostage crisis that took place last Monday in Manila was foremost on Filipinos' minds as they searched the Internet for news about it. As a result, "SWAT" emerged as the top newsmaker of the week among Filipinos, according to Google Zeitgeist.

"SWAT" refers to Special Weapons and Tactics team, the group of policemen that made the attack on the tourist bus carrying Hong Kong tourists, earlier hostaged by dismissed police officer Senior Inspector Rolando Mendoza.

The hostage crisis tragically ended in the deaths of 8 of the tourists, and Mendoza died from a sniper's bullet.

As the attack by the SWAT team was broadcasted live in the Philippines and the rest of the world, people saw how the SWAT team bungled the operation.

The following day, the SWAT team had their own "attacks" on the Internet, as netizens pointed out the team's incompetence by saying SWAT means: "Sana Wag Akong Tamaan”, "Sorry Wala Akong Training", "Sugod-Wait-Atras-Tago”, "Sledgehammer Whacking Assault Team", "Sir Wait And Take a break”, “Super Walang Alam Tactics”, and “Sh** Wait Atras Tayo”.

News networks such as CNN, BBC, and ABS-CBN also figured in the newsmakers list this week as people browsed the Internet for the latest updates on the crisis.

Meanwhile, Venus Raj, the Philippines' bet to the Miss Universe 2010 pageant, was the 3rd top newsmaker of the week. Raj was proclaimed fourth runner-up in the prestigious beauty tilt.

"Miss Universe" also made it to the fastest rising news topic of the week, second only to the Youth Olympics 2010.
