Labor group: Don't take these 5 college courses -- for now

MANILA, Philippines - A labor group has urged young Filipinos to stay away from five "heavily oversubscribed" college courses as these will only reduce their chances of getting a job after graduation.

In a statement released on Sunday, Ernesto Herrera, secretary-general of the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines or TUCP, said these 5 courses are:

  • Teacher Education
  • Nursing
  • Business Administration
  • Information Technology
  • Hotel and Restaurant Management

He noted that there are "far too many fresh graduates of these five courses, and large numbers of new students are still going into these programs."

"We're afraid the huge oversupply of graduates of these programs has made it exceptionally difficult for them to sell their skills to employers," said Herrera, who was the former chairman of the Senate committee on labor, employment and human resource management.

Herrera said students are better off shifting courses or going into "undersubscribed" programs such as science and technology or agriculture and fisheries.

Vicente Kilayko of the People Management Association of the Philippines or PMAP earlier said that there are 2 factors to consider when choosing a college course -- aptitude and dreams.

Kilayko made the statement as some parents tend to push their children into taking up programs that they are not really inclined to.
