MANILA, Philippines - Oil giant Pilipinas Shell recently launched a new type of diesel in the country which it claims can help engines "operate at their best."

Called the Shell V-Power Diesel, the fuel is said to "control and remove deposit buildup in new and old cars," as well as "help restore and maintain engine performance."

Over time, deposits can build up in diesel fuel injection systems, reducing combustion efficiency and engine power.

Pilipinas Shell said it decided to launch V-Power in the country, citing the recent rise in diesel-powered cars.

"We found out that some drivers, in addition to looking for a fuel that maintains the engine in top condition, also wanted a more rewarding driving experience," Bong Fadullon, Pilipinas Shell general manager for retail, said in a statement.

Eric Holthusen, Shell fuels technology manager added, "Every drop of Shell V-Power Diesel is designed to help your diesel car achieve its performance potential."

Shell V-Power Diesel was first launched in Italy in 2002, and is now sold in 24 countries, including the Philippines.

In 2006, Shell said the diesel fuel powered the Audi R10 TDI to victory in the world-famous 25 Hours of Le Mans Endurance Race.

Recently, Shell held its first Asian Eco-Marathon in Malaysia, a search for the best student-made car that travels the farthest distance using the least amount of fuel and carbon emissions.

Among the fuel sources used by the 81 teams from Asian schools (including the Philippines) are gasoline, biofuels, hydrogen fuel cells, and diesel.

Team Philippines brought home 2 special awards in the said racing event.
