'Fifty Shades' fans petition for casting change
MANILA – Hollywood actor Matt Bomer became a worldwide and local trend on the social networking site Twitter on Thursday as fans protested the casting choices made by producers and author E L James for the upcoming film based on the best-seller “Fifty Shades of Grey.”
On Monday, James announced on Twitter that Charlie Hunnam of "Pacific Rim" and Dakota Johnson of "The Social Network" would play the book's lead characters Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, respectively, in the movie version.
The announcement was met by thousands of tweets demanding that Hunnam be replaced by Bomer, known for his role as a male stripper in "Magic Mike."
Some also suggested that Hunnam be replaced by Ian Somerhalder, known for his role as Damon Salvatore in television show “The Vampire Diaries”.
“This is not real. Oh no!:( I think Ian Somerhalder or Matt Bomer should have been Christian Grey,” said @MissSomerholic .
@GanyanTayoEhhh said: “Honestly, I'm really disappointed on the Fifty Shades Of Gray Cast. Matt Bomer or Ian Somerhalder should be Christian Grey. Case-closed!!!”
“Only Matt Bomer!” posted @annemrgrtbtr.
“I can't even imagine charlie hunnam as christian grey, he's not even on the list before :( so disappointing,” tweeted @dummytinnie.
One Twitter user, @MattSBomerFan was happy that the actor trended online: “Yayy Matt Bomer is still trending!! This shows that many people are so disappointed that Matt wasn't chosen as CG.”
‘Hot enough to play Grey’
Most of the fans argued that Bomer is perfect fit for Christian Grey. On Twitter and Facebook, fans said Bomer is more qualified than Charlie Hunnam in terms "hotness."
“Breaking news: Matt Bomer is OVER QUALIFIED to play Christian Grey. They couldn't handle his hotness. - Fifty Shades Producers,” tweeted @GreyAnastasiaS.
“Matt Bomer and Ian Somerhalder are the most perfect man to play Christian Grey. They were born to wear a suit and tie!” said @itsvenbtw.
@gracialovesgrey said: “Charlie Hunnam is nothing compared to Matt Bomer. The looks, the appeal, the effortless hotness.”
“He somehow looks old and CG is supposed to be the vision of HOT and HANDSOME,” said @elainehba.
The aggressive fans also want to change the female lead to Alexis Bledel, who is the former star of hit TV show “Gilmore Girls.”
"Matt Bomer & Alexis Bledel are just perfect for Christian Grey & Anastasia Steele, not them,” tweeted @kbyeimbored.
The trend has led to the creation of an online petition on Change.org that has been set up to encourage the recasting of the film with Alexis Bledel and Matt Bomer as the lead stars.
"We want Matt Bomer and Alexis Bledel as Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele in 50 Shades," the petition said.
"Matt Bomer is the perfect description of Christian Grey and Alexis Bledel is the perfect actress to represent Anastasia Steele and if they are not, nobody will be," it said.
As of posting, more than 20,000 have signed the petition.
But not everyone agrees that a petition is necessary.
“OH MY GAWD...how do I even respond to this...except NO NO NOPE. People NEED to STOP!“ said @ruthhcchen.
"Fifty Shades of Grey" was first published in 2011 and became a global bestseller because of its depiction of explicit scenes involving bondage and sadomasochism .
The movie will be directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and is set for release in 2014.
