Trumpets eyes international staging for 'Bluebird'
MANILA -- Local theater group Trumpets is hoping to go international with its latest stage offering, a lesson-filled tale about finding true happiness which debuts later this month.
With book and lyrics by Jaime del Mundo and music by Rony Fortich, "The Bluebird of Happiness" marks Trumpets' 23rd anniversary, as well as its musical comeback after staging theatrical hits like "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" and "The Little Mermaid."
Also directed by del Mundo, the local adaptation of the Belgian play by Maurice Maeterlinck will run at the Meralco Theater in Pasig City starting September 27.
"The Bluebird of Happiness" tells the story of Mytyl and Tyltyl, two poor children who go on an adventure in search of the bluebird, a mythical creature said to be the source of happiness.
"A lot of kids today, they're looking for their own happiness in their own way, sa pamamagitan ng ibang bagay. [This musical is about] two kids na naghahanap din ng happiness sa buhay nila," Trumpets' Carlo Orosa told ABS-CBN News at the sidelines of a recent press preview of the play.
The children's search for the bluebird takes them to five magical places -- The Land of Memory, where they meet their late grandparents; The Kingdom of the Night, where the two must face their nightmares; The Forest, which is populated with trees with a grudge against humans; The Palace of Plenty, which is abundant with riches and luxury; and The Land of Soon-to-be-Born, where sadness is unknown.
"They found it through this beautiful adventure," Orosa continued, "and in the end, actually, nahanap nila 'yung true happiness within the family, within their home."
According to Orosa, some 50 cast members will bring to life the children's journey on stage, with young actors Anton Posadas and Guido Gatmaytan, and Alessa Zialcita and Chimmi Kotchet-Chua portraying Tyltyl and Mytyl, respectively.
Joining them in the lead roles are Mayen Bustamente-Cadd as Mama Tyl, Jennifer Villegas-dela Cruz as Berylune, Lynn Serhman as Tylette, and Robie Zialcita as Tylo.
Also part of the cast are Joel Trinidad as Night, Carla Guevarra-Laforteza as Light, Joy Viarata as Grandma Tyl, and Steve Cadd as Grandpa Tyl.
World stage next?
Noting that Trumpets has held performances in the Middle East, Orosa said the theater group is hoping to bring the "The Bluebird of Happiness" to the international stage.
Asked if the company is aiming to make it to Broadway, Orosa said, "Who knows? The market is very wide open. I think hindi naman kaila sa mundo ngayon ang kakayanan ng Filipino artist, so this is probably a step for us to bring this abroad."
"Madali siyang i-market dahil English eh, and it's an English market out there. So we're looking forward to bring this musical abroad in the coming years, and to proudly bring the Philippine brand, not just of the artist, but of the work," he said.
Set to run until October 20, "The Bluebird of Happiness" features musical arrangement by Mon Faustino, stage and costume designs by Mio Infante, lighting by John Battala, vocal direction by Sweet Plantado-Tiongson, and choreography by Nancy Crowe.
