Lawmaker pops question during 2014 budget talks
MANILA - The 2014 national budget deliberations in the plenary of the lower House momentarily stopped on Friday night to give way to a rare sight in Congress.
With the apparent connivance of House Speaker Sonny Belmonte and House Majority Leader Neptali Gonzales II and his colleagues, Magdalo Rep. Ashley Acedillo rose on a matter of personal privilege and said he wants to propound one question.
Acedillo asked the majority leader to recognize Maria Pax Rosario Ocampo, who was seated at the VIP gallery.
Gonzales recognized Ocampo, and moved to suspend session to allow Ocampo to go to the front of the session.
As she approached, congressmen lined up the center aisle, much like when they welcome the President when he delivers his state of the Nation Address.
Acedillo met Ocampo in front with flowers and popped the question.
"Will you please do me the honor? Please be my wife. Please put it on record."
Acedillo said Ocampo said yes.
Belmonte promptly congratulated the couple, who ascended the rostrum to greet him.
Belmonte said he looks forward to the wedding.
As the couple descended, Belmonte teased another bachelor lawmaker, Rep. Mark Villar, that he should be next.
