'Free Carlos Celdran' FB account easily gets 23,808 likes
MANILA, Philippines - The Facebook account "Free Carlos Celdran" created by the artist-performer's friends after his arrest on Thursday has already mustered 23,808 likes.
"This page was created by friends of Carlos Celdran clamoring for his release, condemning the antiquated views of the church, and supporting the Reproductive Health Bill to uplift Filipinos' lives," creators of the Facebook account said.
Celdran was hauled to jail after he disrupted an ongoing Mass at the Manila Cathedral.
Wearing a dark suit and top hat, Celdran walked in front of the altar and held up a placard with the word "Damaso" in the middle of the homily.
Inside the most famous Catholic church in the country, Celdran also shouted "Stop getting involved in politics!"
Reports said Church officials informed Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim of the incident, which was followed by Celdran's arrest.
Celdran, also a much sought-after tour guide in Intramuros, is currently detained at the Manila City Jail.
An update on the Facebook account said that Celdran's family has already posted P6,000 bail and he may be released around 5 p.m. Friday.
It said that Celdran may be facing a case for violation of Article 133 of the Revised Penal Code for "offending religious feelings".
The said article says, "The penalty of arresto mayor in its maximum period to prision correccional in its minimum period shall be imposed upon anyone who, in a place devoted to religious worship or during the celebration of any religious ceremony shall perform acts notoriously offensive to the feelings of the faithful."
