MANILA, Philippines – Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Tagle has denied making a statement on Facebook about the anti-cybercrime law, which took effect on Wednesday.

This after a statement favoring the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, which used the name “Archbishop Luis Antonio Gokim Tagle, D. D., STD”, started circulating on Facebook amid protests against the controversial measure.

In a letter he wrote on Thursday before leaving for Rome to attend the Synod of Bishops on the New Evangelization, Tagle stressed that all his official communications and statements are released through the Archdiocesan Chancery and the Archdiocesan Office of Communications.

He added that those who receive “communications and statements allegedly from me” should first check their veracity with these offices or the Manila archdiocese’s website (www.rcam.org).

While he denied having a personal account on Facebook, Tagle said there is a Facebook page with the account name “Luis Antonio G. Tagle” which is being maintained with his permission by Jesuit Communications.

Meanwhile, the archbishop urged the public to be responsible and truthful in using new technology such as social media.
