Moms donate breast milk for typhoon victims
MANILA - Several Filipina moms have donated breast milk to the Philippine General Hospital (PGH), in order to help needy victims of Tropical Storm 'Ondoy.'
Atty. Jenny Ong, who recently gave birth, donated all the breast milk she could spare to the PGH's Milk Bank.
The milk she collected and placed within plastic baby bottles filled an entire cooler.
"May makikinabang na ibang sanggol (Other babies will benefit from it)," she said.
Another woman named Rowena said she would only collect just enough breast milk for her child, before donating it to needy mothers and babies at evacuation centers.
"Natutuwa po ako, may ibang sanggol na makakainom ng gatas ko. (I am happy that other babies will get to drink my breast milk)," she said.
PGH doctors explained that evacuees may have trouble accessing clean water to mix with baby formulas, or to wash feeding bottles.
Dr. Michael Tee, PGH spokesperson, also said that the stressful conditions at the evacuation center would inhibit the flow of milk for lactating mothers.
The hospital has reportedly been getting a constant flow of breast milk from willing donors.
The milk, usually packaged in bottles or plastic packs, are processed in a pasteurizer for 2 hours to ensure the milk's safety and so that the liquid will not spoil easily.
Donations made to the PGH milk bank are currently being distributed to wanting mothers at the Ultra Stadium in Pasig City.
Medical staff also reminded evacuees about the benefits of breast feeding their babies early on. Report by Maan Macapagal, ABS-CBN News.
