MANILA, Philippines – The country’s current top male model John Spainhour credits his training with the US Marine Corps for helping him achieve his present success.

Spainhour revealed that he trained at the US Marine Corps to be a sniper.

“The training in general was tough. To be a sniper on top of that is…I had to go through a lot of hardship, a lot of blood, sweat and tears. At the end though, it’s well worth it and I’m definitely glad I did that. Even to this day; graduating from sniper school is like, one of the top…it made me the person I am today,” he said in a statement.

That kind of training toughened him up, he said. “It’s so tough mentally and physically that if you don’t enjoy doing it, you’re just going to lose your concentration. But I have to say, I really enjoy it,” Spainhour said.

During his stint with the Marines, he even became one of its top shooters. When he graduated from boot camp, he was the best shooter in his graduating class.

“Every time, throughout college, I was still the top shooter and right before I got out of the Marine Corps I had one last qualification at the end. I was one point away from getting a perfect score! In that level of shooting that’s like the Olympics,” he said.

The model said he still practices shooting even though he is no longer in the Marines. “For fun, I like to go out and shoot and stuff like that,” he said.

Sadly, he said the choices of venues locally are quite limited. “I go to pistol ranges so I can shoot pistols, but it’s stationary. You can’t really have fun with it. Back home in the States where I’m from, you could while you’re outdoors. There’s the outdoors, open fields, the mountains. You can just go out to the field to set up targets and shoot, and do all the stuff that was part of my training. Here in the city, that’s obviously going to be a little difficult,” he said.

That’s why in between modeling gigs, Spainhour finds himself mostly at the gym.

Spainhour said he did not expect to do modeling. “The transition was a little difficult, but it’s definitely a nice transition. I sort of imagined it too. I pretty much made myself, like, as a sniper, you’re constantly dirty. You make yourself look like mud with dirt, bushes and stuff. Now, I’m making myself look all pretty, dressing up nicely, it’s like a complete 180,” he said.

Spainhour won this year’s Century Tuna Superbods and also walked the runway at the recent Bench jeans and underwear show and the Cosmopolitan Bachelor Bash.

He is also the image model for recently launched skin care brand Kojie.san, which Spainhour considers his big break.

“Before Kojie.san gave me this big break, I had almost lost hope. I was new here and had religiously been attending the go-sees that my agency sent me to,” John said.

“I’m excited about this TV commercial. This is the first time that the company is coming out with one and I’m that lucky guy to appear in it. Plus, it required me to train with a Wushu master to perform the scenes. It helped me enhance the set of skills I acquired during my own training with the Marines. So this is very different from the usual boy-next-door roles that I encountered in the past,” he said.
