MANILA, Philippines - Mardi Gras, which literally means "Fat Tuesday" in French, refers to the celebrations prior to the fasting season of Lent, which starts on Ash Wednesday.

It is commonly marked by rich and fatty food, street dancing, flamboyant parades and colorful costumes.

Given this, a Mardi Gras celebration tends to conjure images of extravagance. But did you know that a little creativity can let you bring home this carnival season for the holidays without burning a hole in your wallet?

Creative designer Archie Aguido, whose clients include no less than ABS-CBN Corp. president Charo Santos-Concio, shared with Umagang Kay Gandasome quick tips on infusing elements of Mardi Gras when designing Christmas trees.

For him, Mardi Gras is all about the use of bright, vivid colors. Think fuschia, orange and neon colored ornaments -- from the Christmas balls and ribbons to the flowers and leaves.

Aguido also suggested the use of gold or silver masks, or anything you have at home that sparkles such as rocks and synthetic gems.

Another trick to achieving a Mardi Gras style Christmas tree is to "break down inhibitions." Try to experiment with different tree decorations by mixing old and new ones, he said.

Make it a point to invest in high-quality ornaments rather than settling with cheap ones found on sidewalks, Aguido said. This will save you more money in the long run, he said, as these pieces can last for years.

Having a Mardi Gras Christmas tree is just one way of doubling up the fun and festive mood this season.
