Arida should use Filipino, says ex-beauty queen-turned-news anchor
MANILA-- Former beauty queen and ABS-CBN news anchor Tina Marasigan believes the Philippines' Miss Universe bet, Ariella Arida, should use the Filipino language during the question and answer portion of the beauty pageant.
Arida has received criticisms on social media about her communication skills, particularly the way she speaks English.
Asked by her Studio 23 "Iba-Balita" newscast co-anchor Anthony Taberna about her opinion on the issue, Marasigan said that although English is the country's second language, Filipinos still express ideas better in their own native language.
If Arida chooses to use Filipino during the question and answer portion, she can have a translator like the other candidates from non-English speaking countries.
"Though competitive tayo [sa English], feeling ko mas magandang maipapahayag ang nasa isip kapag Tagalog [ang gamit]," Marasigan said.
Marasigan joined the 2011 Binibining Pilipinas pageant and made it to the Top 15. She is also one of DZMM's "Traffic Angels" and was a former UAAP courtside reporter.
Arida, who already flew to Russia for the 2013 Miss Universe pageant, admitted that she is not as fluent in English compared to other Filipina beauty queens.
While the 24-year-old beauty queen recognizes the criticisms on social media, Arida assured the public that she will do her best to bring home the Miss Universe crown.
"You know, in the competition, it’s going to be different. I know I can deliver," she said.--Iba-balita, Studio 23, October 21, 2013
