ABS-CBN stars in 'Miss Saigon' wish list
MANILA, Philippines – Kapamilya stars dominated "Miss Saigon" Philippine representative Dong Alegre's wish list of Filipino female singers he wants to see audition for the role of Kim for the upcoming revival of the international hit musical in London next year.
“Easily I can name three or four — Rachelle Ann Go, Denise Laurel, K-La Rivera and Karylle. I’d love to see them all audition,” Alegre told The Philippine Star in an article published on Monday.
He later also mentioned ABS-CBN singer Angeline Quinto. “I would love to see and hear her at the auditions,” said Alegre, who is producer Cameron Mackintosh’s representative in the Philippines.
“This is now their time to ‘go for it.’ We’ve all seen how Lea Salonga proved to one and all that a Filipino can do it. It’s the chance of a lifetime. Any aspiring auditionee out there could be the next swan on the ‘big lake’ which is the West End. The opportunity to perform in the international stage only comes to you once in your life... and you better grab on to it the first chance you get!” he advised.
Karylle, who will be appearing as Sita in the revival of “Rama Hari” next month, has already indicated that she plans to join the auditions, which are tentatively set from November 19 to 22 at the Opera Haus of The Philippine Opera Company in Makati.
Rivera, for her part, will be seen in the Asian premiere of the new musical “Aladdin,” which will also premiere next month.
Go, a former ABS-CBN talent, received rave reviews for her stage debut in the title role of “The Little Mermaid” last year, while Laurel can be seen in the afternoon series “Pintada.”
Alegre said the production team will be searching for “a new first Kim who will perform most of the shows, an alternate or second Kim, and a third Kim who’s normally chosen from the ensemble.”
He added that they will also be casting for seven male and female performers for the musical’s Asian ensemble.
Alegre is not yet sure if “Miss Saigon” alumni will be allowed to audition next month. “(But) for the role of Kim, we would definitely need young blood,” he said.
According to Alegre, the Philippines is the only country, apart from the UK, where auditions will be held for the musical’s revival. This means that the Filipino hopefuls will be competing with British actors of Asian descent.
“It’s going to be tooth-and-nail till casting is completed. One thing is for sure, our best auditionees will be compared to the best the West End can offer,” he said.
