Halloween came early for some animal creatures as they dress up in spooky, yet adorable costumes during a pet show organized by an animal welfare group in Manila on Saturday.
The crowd of mostly dogs and cats donned colorful costumes ranging from endearing chefs to scary vampires and headless horsemen, while some opted to dress up as their favorite celebrities.
Some owners even came with their own matching set of costumes and did some basic stunts with their pets.
Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) executive director Anna Carbrera says Halloween can be a time to bond between master and pet.
"We always tell people spend more time with your pets that includes the holidays like Halloween. So when people like to dress up, they also like to dress up their pets and you see that they're closer," she said.
For Julie Imperio and her pet Chihuahua, Halloween was all about having fun.
"Halloween, for me and my pet, means a time for enjoyment by dressing up and being a kid, doing some trick or treating and attending parties," Imperio said.
Aside from establishing bonds, the costume show aims to highlight the importance of animal welfare amid growing number of pet cruelty in the Philippines and abroad.
Rising numbers of animal abuse, along with various cases of pet cruelty being uploaded on video sharing sites, prompted local officials and animal welfare groups to hunt down the abusers and amend an existing law to increase the penalties of violators.
