MANILA, Philippines - Contrary to what most people think, Halloween is not just for kids who want to go door-to-door and hoard all the candy that they can.

The annual holiday observed on October 31 is the only time of the year when adults can relive their childhood by walking around in outrageous costumes without people rolling their eyes in annoyance (or thinking they're on their way to a cosplay convention).

They have come up with all sorts of Halloween get-ups in the past years -- from movie characters to inanimate objects. And now, with Halloween just around the corner, Filipino kids and adults alike turn to the Internet once more for costume ideas that will make them stand out from the rest of the crowd.

This year, the most popular costumes for Halloween are anime characters and vampires, according to Google Philippines.

The search engine said this probably came from the hype brought by recent cosplay events in and out of the country as well as the popularity of vampire-themed shows such as the movie Twilight and the television series Imortal.

"Anime costumes for Halloween proved to be the Filipino favorite probably as an affinity with costume play or cosplay, coming from the hype of the HKTB-Animax Hong Kong Halloween Treats cosplay competition and the upcoming Anime Festival Asia: Regional Cosplay Competition in Singapore," Google Philippines said in an e-mail to abs-cbnNEWS.com.

It continued, "Meanwhile, the popularity of the Twilight saga and the teleserye Imortal got Pinoys searching for vampire costumes. Zombie costumes are another classic favorite."

Also popular in online Halloween costume searches in the country are the humanoid race Na'vi at James Cameron's film Avatar and Disney princesses such as Aurora of Sleeping Beauty and Belle of Beauty and the Beast.

Couple costumes are a hit among Filipinos as well, such as Fred and Wilma from the animated sitcom The Flintstones and Shrek and Princess Fiona from the Shrek movie.

Meanwhile, lingerie and lady clown costumes were among the top searches for the country's female Internet users, while others searched the web for ways to use recycled materials in their outfits this Halloween.

"Some opt to be pro-environment by searching for ways on how to use recycled materials for their Halloween costumes," Google Philippines said.

No matter what the costume, make sure that it is safe to wear. As much as possible, Halloween outfits should be reflective or are bright enough to be seen by motorists at night.

Costumes shouldn't also be too long or big that these can bring you in danger of tripping or obscuring your vision.

Happy Halloween, everyone!
