MANILA – Beauty queens Shamcey Supsup and Venus Raj came to the defense of Ariella Arida as the latter recently became the subject of online bashing just a few days before the 2013 Miss Universe pageant.
Before she left for Russia last Monday, Arida said she is well aware that she is having difficulty speaking in English, but she is doing her best to improve on her communication skills.
Citing her non-English speaking competitors, Arida believes that what is more important is that she is able to convey her thoughts and feelings to the judges and the audience.
In an interview with ABS-CBN News, both Supsup and Raj said Arida should not be bothered by her bashers because one cannot please everybody.
“Lagi rin naming sinasabi sa kanya na hindi niya mapi-please ang lahat ng tao. Laging may gusto sayo, may ayaw sayo. Ang role mo bilang kandidato, bilang isang babae, gawin mo [ang lahat ng makakaya mo],” Raj said.
The 2010 Miss Universe fourth runner-up said it saddens her that those who are bashing Arida are also the same people who should be rallying behind her.
“Mahirap kasi kapag nagpaapekto ka sa sinasabi ng ibang tao. Ang nakakalungkot doon, tayo tayo lang ding mga Pilipino ang nagba-bash ng isa’t isa. Dapat nga tayo ang sumusuporta sa kanya,” she said.
As for Supsup, she reminded Arida to do her best and leave her worries behind.
“Naalala ko during Venus’ time. Sabi niya 'yung binababa ng tao, itinataas ng Diyos. If you think what you’re doing is right, and you’re representing our country in the best way that you can, no matter what people say about you, the real people will appreciate your efforts. For us, you are a winner,” she said.
Supsup said she is proud of how Arida has transformed into a very confident woman.
“When I talked to her, all the negative things that people are telling her, hindi niya dinidibdib. What she does, pinu-push niya sarili niya to do better. When I saw her last interview, iba na si Ara. She’s so confident. Sabi nga namin, maraming matatalino, matatangkad, sexy, pero sino 'yung confident? 'Yung attention would go to her kasi you could see na she exudes confidence,” she said.
While she won’t be able to watch Arida live in Russia, the 2011 Miss Universe third runner-up said the beauty queen has her 100% support.
“Excited ako for her kasi nakikita ko 'yung pictures niya sa social media, nakakatuwa. Nakaka-proud lang. We feel like we are the big sisters ng mga bagong beauty queens. Gusto ko nga sana pumunta doon kaso lang very hectic na, November na rin kasi. Pero 'yung mommy ko, pumunta siya to support,” she said.
Arida will represent the Philippines in the upcoming Miss Universe pageant which will be held in Moscow, Russia on November 9.
