'The Producers' is Rep's last hurrah for year
MANILA -- Repertory Philippines is set to kick off its final production of the year with an adaptation of the acclaimed Broadway musical, "The Producers."
The Tony-winning comedy with its ridiculous accents, homosexual stereotypes, Nazis and Adolf Hitler in lederhose is sure to make Manila theater goers laugh out loud when it opens on November 15 at Onstage, Greenbelt 1, Makati City.
Since its premiere on Broadway in 2001, the musical written by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan adapted from the 1968 film of the same name, won 12 Tony Awards, 10 Drama Desk Awards and three Laurence Oliveir Awards.
As with the film, the story is about Max Bialystock, a struggling Broadway producer, and Leo Bloom, a stage-struck accountant. These two men join forces in order to make mega-bucks by producing the worst musical ever seen on Broadway. When they receive a musical script from an ex-Nazi stormtrooper about Hitler’s rise to power in song and dance, they are convinced that they have found a show that is guaranteed to offend just about everybody.
Directed by Jamie Del Mundo, with musical direction by Onyl Torres, the local production will be led by theater veterans Topper Fabregas as Leo and Carlo Orosa and Robbie Zialcita alternating as Max Bialystock.
Father and son, Noel Trinidad and Joel Trinidad will play the cross-dressing Roger De Bris and an ex-Nazi stormtrooper, Franz Liebkind, respectively.
Actress G Toengi will play the lone female lead, Ulla.
The ensemble also features Nelsito Gomez, Steven Conde, Tristan Cheng, Jay Pangilinan, Chino Veguillas, Leroy de Guzman, Natalie Everett, David Shawn Delgado, Liesl Batucan, Mica Pineda, Shalee Vicencio and Gemini Quintos.
