Gloria Diaz believes Ariella Arida can win Miss Universe
MANILA – Miss Universe 1969 Gloria Diaz believes that Ariella Arida has what it takes to be the next reigning queen of the international beauty pageant.
“I think she is beautiful. She’s got everything, she’s a true Filipina. She’s very exotic in a positive way, she’s tall. She’s beautiful. Pero tayong mga Pilipino, na-spoil na eh. Kapag first runner-up, talo. No, they are all winners,” she told ABS-CBN News in an interview.
Diaz stressed, however, that Arida will make the country proud whether or not she gets to bring home the crown.
“We are so near. Basta you are in the top 5, winner ka na. [If she doesn’t make it] It’s still okay because she’s beautiful. She can get into movies, do hosting. It’s just the beginning,” she said.
Diaz, who was among the judges when Arida won Binibining Pilipinas, said people will surely like the Laguna beauty because she also has a good personality.
“There were nine or ten other judges. I like her face, I like everything about her. The others liked her, too. I think it was a unanimous decision. But I feel sad if she will be stressed about [winning] because there was another winner just before her,” she said.
In the last three years, the Philippines has been consistent in sealing a spot in Miss Universe pageant's Top 5.
Venus Raj finished fourth runner-up in 2010, Shamcey Supsup finished third runner-up in 2011, while Janine Tugonon finished first runner-up in 2012.
Despite the pressure, Arida said in her earlier interview that she is ready to take on the challenge.
Arida is reportedly among the early favorites in this year's pageant, with many websites and betting sites giving her big chances to take home the crown.
This year’s Miss Universe pageant will be held at the Crocus City Hall in Moscow, Russia on November 9.
