Three yoga instructors pointed to commitment, devotion and attention to the discipline in order to reap fully the benefits of yoga exercises.
During ANC’s Shop Talk last Wednesday, yoga instructors Pio Baquiran of the Vinyasa Yoga Center, Tesa Celdran of Pulse Yoga and Tristan Choa of Birkham Yoga Manila agreed that both mind and body must be at work while attending yoga classes.
“Comprehensive body workout in the context of… mind, body and spirit, which is what yoga is all about,” Choa said.
Choa pointed out that injury happens in yoga exercises because of improper breathing and people’s attention tends to drift away while doing various body positions or Asana.
“Only when you relax, you get deeper into the posture… and you start to analyze a flow; there is a certain flow to it within the posture,” he added.
Baquiran, meanwhile, stressed commitment and devotion to yoga. The 40-year-old yoga instructor said the benefits to be reaped from yoga exercises depend on how much one invests on it.
“You commit yourself regardless how many minutes [you spend doing the exercise] as along as you do it regularly ‘yon ang pinaka-importante,” he said.
Baquiran said beyond the physical benefits yoga can help especially in “balancing” one’s emotions and becoming more optimistic in life.
“It makes you a better person to a certain extent because somehow it changes your character… when you practice yoga, it will bring you up to the stage of goodness… you develop doon compassion, kindness, peace, love, and that’s what we need,” he added.
He also pointed out that although there are various styles of yoga the one common goal still is “to rise the level of consciousness” of an individual.
Celdran, who was drawn to the discipline due to its promise of mental clarity, also urged people to try yoga, whether they are flexible or not, because of its benefits.
