MANILA, Philippines – Works of National Artist Benedicto “BenCab” Cabrera and photographer Melvyn Calderon are currently on display in an exhibit that aims to promote awareness of the need to preserve the Bird Islet of the Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park (TRNP) in Palawan.

The exhibit, titled “Birds of Tubbataha,” is set at the BenCab Museum in Baguio. It will run until December 9 this year.

In “Birds of Tubbataha” are eight of Cabrera’s watercolor paintings and Calderon’s 34 photographs, all depicting Tubbataha’s migratory birds on the Bird Islet.

Part of the proceeds from the sales of the exhibition will benefit the TRNP, one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Philippines.

Six sea bird species can be found in the TRNP, but the breeding population declined dramatically through the years due to mad-made disturbance and exploitation.

Accompanied by foreign scientists, ornithologists and marine biologists, Calderon and Cabrera visited the TRNP in a World Wildflife Fund-organized trip two years ago, where they were able to produce the photos and paintings, respectively.
