MANILA, Philippines – Zoren Legaspi said he was dead serious about tying the knot with his partner of 12 years, Carmina Villaroel, that he wanted the most powerful man in the country to officiate their wedding.

In an interview on “Kris TV” on Monday, Legaspi revealed that he was hoping that President Benigno Aquino III would proclaim him and Villaroel as husband and wife in a surprise ceremony held in Las Piñas last Thursday.

The President is the older brother of “Kris TV” host Kris Aquino.

“Gusto ko kasi someone who is really powerful para ang presence niya doon [ay magsasabi na] hindi kami nakikipagbiruan,” Legaspi told Aquino, who was one of their principal sponsors. “Kasi if you watch the wedding, parang it’s really like a show.”

Aquino, an actress, host and top product endorser, replied: “You really wanted someone with authority talaga. Na parang ‘pag ito ang nagkasal sa inyo ay wala nang hiwalayan talaga.”

“Pero hindi talaga pwede eh,” she added. “Inisip din ‘yan nila Ogie (Alcasid) at Regine (Velasquez) dati, hindi pwede.”

In the end, Legaspi and Villaroel’s wedding was officiated by Amy Javier, a justice at the Court of Appeals.

“Bongga ah,” Aquino said, noting that a city mayor or a judge can already proclaim them as husband and wife.

‘Perfect gown’

Aside from finding an officiant, Legaspi also had a hard time getting a wedding gown for Villaroel since it was supposed to be a surprise ceremony.

The wedding was initially disguised as a shoot for a commercial for an ice cream brand that the Legaspi family endorses.

“Doon kami nahirapan sa gown,” said Legaspi, who eventually ran to top local designer Paul Cabral, who made Villaroel’s gown for this year’s Star Magic Ball.

Villaroel, for her part, said she did not have an idea at all about the wedding preparations.

“Nasukat ko ‘yung lining. Ang kulit kasi nila, sabi nila kailangan ko i-fit ‘yung lining. [Pero] Wala kasi akong inkling na may mangyayaring proposal o wedding. Talagang ang iniisip ko lang, ano ba talaga ang kinalaman ng formal affair sa ice cream?” she said. “Bahala na, deadma na basta in-approve na nila (agency), go lang nang go.”

“So the day itself, ‘yung gown tinignan ko lang, sabi ko, ‘okay.’ ‘Di ko talaga inisip siya na pangkasal. Wala, as in wala talaga.”

Villaroel also praised Cabral for designing her wedding gown. “Si Paul malinis talaga [ang fit],” she said.
