THE LIST: Local plays, shows to expect in 2013

MANILA, Philippines – The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) recently announced its lineup of events for 2013, which include a mix of old and new shows.

This year, the CCP aims to focus on three areas: music theater, arts education and strengthening the center’s online presence.

Some of 2013’s highlights include five original Filipino musicals such as “Katy,” a revival of the Ryan Cayabyab musical based on the life of Bodabil Queen Katy de la Cruz.

There will also be a series of events dubbed “Musical Revue,” where local theater stars will perform songs from Broadway and West End, as well as original Filipino works.

Several festivals are also lined up for next year, from the Cinemalaya and Virgin Labfest to the Pasinaya Open House Festival, which is considered the largest multi-arts festival in the country.

Below is the full list of CCP’s events for 2013:

JANUARY

Katy

Schedule: January 16 to October 27 at the Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino (Little Theater)
Who’s in it: Isay Alvarez, Tirso Cruz III, Gian Magdangal, Lou Veloso, Epy Quizon, Tricia Jimenez and Dulce
What it is about: A revival of the musical based on the life of Bodabil Queen Katy dela Cruz, “Katy” features original music by Ryan Cayabyab, libretto by Jose Javier Reyes, musical direction by Mel Villena and direction by Nestor Torre.

MetOpera in HD launch: Verdi’s Aida

Schedule: January 19 at the Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino (Little Theater)
Who’s in it: Liudmyla Monastyrska, Roberto Alagna, Olga Borodina
What it is about: “Aida” is the Met’s unforgettable production of Verdi’s ancient Egyptian drama, which tells the story of an enslaved Ethiopian princess caught in a love triangle.

Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra (PPO): Happy 40th, PPO!

Schedule: January 25 at Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo (Main Theater)
Who’s in it: Olivier Ochanine, Dino Decena, Ryan Cayabyab
What it is about: In this concert, Ochanine conducts Richard Wagner’s “Siegfried Idyll,” Decena plays the violin in Robert Schumann’s “Symphony No. 1 – Spring”, Cayabyab premieres his new music.

High Spirits

Schedule: January 31 to March 31 at the Pasilyo Vicente Manansala (second floor hallway) and Pasilyo Carlos Francisco (Little Theater Lobby)
Who’s in it: various artists
What it is about: A group exhibit by artist alumnae of the College of the Holy Spirit, “High Spirits” marks the centennial celebration of the school.

FEBRUARY

Pasinaya: CCP Open House Festival

Schedule: February 3 at all CCP venues
Who’s in it: various artists
What it is about: With more than 300 shows in music, theater, dance, visual arts, film and literature, the Pasinaya is considered the largest multi-arts festival in the country. This year’s festival focuses on Filipino-Chinese arts and culture.

Tanghalang Pilipino: Ibalong

Schedule: February 8 to 13 at the Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino
Who’s in it: various artists
What it is about: “Ibalong” is a new musical based on the folk epic of the same title.

Orchestra Nipponica Tokyo

Schedule: February 9 at the Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo
Who’s in it: Orchestra Nipponica Tokyo
What it is about: Guest orchestra Orchestra Nipponica Tokyo plays contemporary classical music.

Ballet Philippines: Midsummer Night’s Dream

Schedule: February 15 to 17 at the Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo
Who’s in it: Ballet Philippines
What it is about: A ballet in the neo-classical style choreographed by Hong Kong-based Carlo Pacis, “Midsummer Night’s Dream” is noted for its outstanding artistry, structure and invention.

Endframe Video Art Project 3

Schedule: February 15 to March at the Bulwagang Fernando Amorsolo (Small Gallery) and Pasilyo Victorio Edades (Fourth Floor Hallway)
Who’s in it: various artists
What it is about: A video art installation by Yason Banal, “Endframe” focuses on political institutions and issues of documentation and patronage. The exhibit is curated by Clarissa Chikiamco.

PPO: Shakespearean Delights

Schedule: February 22 at the Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo
Who’s in it: PPO
What it is about: Olivier Ochanine conducts various works for soprano, tenor and orchestra inspired by Shakespeare’s tales. The concert features soprano Hyunah Yu.

UST Symphony Orchestra: Sampung Mga Daliri

Schedule: February 23 to 24 at the Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo
Who’s in it: UST Symphony Orchestra
What it is about: The annual recital of the UST Conservatory of Music.

Gawad CCP Awarding Ceremony and Gala Performance

Schedule: February 27 at the Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo
Who’s in it: various artists
What it is about: In this event, the CCP gives its highest award to deserving Filipino artists, cultural workers, and organizations in various art forms. This year’s Gawad CCP awardees include Agnes Locsin (dance), Ramon Santos (music), Zenaida Amador (theater), Cirilo Bautista (literature), Brenda Fajardo (visual arts), Rodolfo “Dolphy” Quizon (film and broadcast arts), Florentino Hornedo (cultural anthropology), and the Silliman University National Writers’ Workshop (arts training and education).

MARCH

Senakulo

What it is about: “Senakulo” is a traditional Lenten play performed by the community theater group Teatro Sta. Ana. Celebrity guests will play key roles.

APRIL

PPO: Mahler’s Fifth

What it is about: For the season finale, Maestro Ochanine conducts Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Overture to Cosi Fan Tutte,” Gustav Mahler’s “Symphony No. 5” and a piano concerto featuring the winner of the PPO competition.

Virgin Labfest

What it is about: Untried, unpublished and unstaged one-act plays are given “bare bones” staging by professional directors and actors. The play festival has earned a solid reputation for its exciting and provocative lineup of one-act plays from both emerging and established playwrights.

Classical Champs

What it is about: Future virtuosos and winners of the National Music Competition for Young Artists perform with the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra.

A New Children’s Musical

What it is about: A children’s book adapted as a musical for children and families.

Cinemalaya: Philippine Independent Film Festival

Schedule: July 26 to August 4 at all venues of the CCP

What it is about: A film competition and festival, Cinemalaya aims to encourage the creation of new cinematic works by Filipino filmmakers.

Special Concert Series 1

Schedule: July 31 at the Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino
Who’s in it: Diomedes Saraza Jr.
What it is about: Saraza, a young award-winning virtuoso violinist, comes home to open the Special Concert Series 1.

AUGUST

Andrea O. Veneracion International Choral Festival

Schedule: August 6 to 11 at all venues of the CCP
Who’s in it: various artists
What it is about: The first Andrea O. Veneracion International Choral Festival brings together choral groups from the Philippines and all over the world to compete in folk music, vocal ensemble and chamber choir. The competition will be anchored by the world renowned Philippine Madrigal Singers, founded by Veneracion.

Ballet Philippines: Giselle

Schedule: August 16 to 18 at the Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo
Who’s in it: Ballet Philippines
What it is about: Premiere danseur Nonoy Froilan restages one of ballet’s greatest romantic tragedies in a new production for Ballet Philippines. The show features a guest dancer from a major ballet company in China.

Bayanihan: Celebrations in Dance
