Teenager asks Gatorade to change formula
MANILA, Philippines - A 15-year-old girl from Hattiesburg, Mississippi has launched an online petition asking the makers of a popular sports drink to remove a harmful ingredient.
Sarah Kavanagh was about to drink a bottle of Gatorade when she read brominated vegetable oil as an ingredient. BVO can cause neurological disorders and altered thyroid hormones.
The US Food and Drug Administration took the ingredient off its list of safe substances in 1970.
Kavanagh then started a petition on Change.org asking Gatorade's maker, PepsiCo, to consider changing the drink's formulation.
But PepsiCo's Jeff Dahncke asserts that BVO had been deemed safe for consumption by federal regulators. -- ANC
