Food shorts: Manila, Baguio, Boracay Christmas
MANILA, Philippines – Here are some new products, events and announcements that may make food lovers happy.

Mandarin’s goodies and festivities
Mandarin Oriental Manila’s Mandarin Deli showcases a selection of Christmas hampers with homemade specialties prepared by executive chef Rene Ottlik and executive pastry chef Roberto Molleman. The hampers, which come in five choices and include the deli’s bestsellers such as duck foie gras terrine, chicken liver pate, English fruit cake, range from P2,288 net to P9,988 net.
Mandarin Deli also accepts advance orders for Christmas carvings, such as the traditional whole roast turkey, honey-glazed ham, whole roast US beef rib eye, baked leg of lamb and Norwegian salmon fillet.
These goodies and hampers will be available until December 30 at hotel and at the Powerplant Mall in Rockwell Center during mall hours. Delivery within Makati is free to one destination for a minimum purchase of P25,000.
Meanwhile, the hotel’s restaurants Paseo Uno, Tin Hau and Tivoli have created special menus for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. To delight the children, Santa will be on hand on Christmas Eve dinner and lunch on Christmas Day. A Christmas Eve Mass will also be held at 10 p.m. at the MO Lounge.
Check in before shopping
To avoid avoid the notorious holiday traffic, why not just book a room at a hotel with malls and Christmas bazaars within easy reach?
Discovery Suites, which is near SM Megamall, Robinsons Galleria, Podium and Shangri-La offers a special overnight rate of P5,500++ for the newly renovated Serendipity Junior Suite, or P6,000++ for the Serendipity one-bedroom suite from now until January 15. The rate is inclusive of breakfast buffet for two guests at Restaurant 5 and complimentary Wi-Fi en suite.
On December 30 and 31, the room with breakfast package for the Serendipity Junior Suite and Serendipity One Bedroom Suite will be available at P7,000++ and 7,500++ respectively.
Gift ideas are also available at the hotel's lobby, including the classic roasted turkey, 22 Prime’s Cochinillo Español, an assortment of Christmas hams and US beef belly. All items require 48-hour advanced notice before pick-up.
On December 24, a Christmas Eve dinner buffet at 22 Prime will feature prawns, Zamboanga “curacha” crabs, New Zealand mussels, roasted US prime rib, US turkey, sugar-crusted ham and more at only P 1,495+ per person.
A Christmas Day Mass will be held from 10-11 a.m. at the Clermont Function Room.
Holiday in Baguio
If you’re celebrating Christmas in Baguio City, the Manor at Camp John Hay has a Christmas Eve dinner buffet from 6-10 p.m. for P1, 800 net per person and P650 net per child (5-10 years old), while a Noche Buena buffet from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. is at P800 net per person and P400 net per child (5-10 years old). The Fusion Band performs at The Manor Garden.
On New Year’s Eve, welcome 2013 with J-Jam and Midlife Crisis Bands at The Manor Garden. The dinner buffet to end the year is accompanied by live entertainment, champagne toast, balloon drop, party favors, noise makers and a fireworks display, for P2,900 net per person. Rates are net of all applicable taxes and other charges.
Christmas in the tropics
For those who prefer a tropical island holiday, Discovery Shores Boracay serves up themed lunch and dinner buffets, native delicacies, and sweet holiday treats at the Sands Restaurant and coastal cuisine at Indigo Restaurant.
From now until Dec. 30, there will be a live station of Comidas Ala Plancha featuring favorites from the Platitos menu, such as the gambas al ajillo, beef salpicao and mushroom champignons. A Christmas holiday platter of jamon, queso de bola, bibingka and ensaymada will be served until Jan. 7. Alongside the live station, a bibingka station serves traditional Filipino Christmas treats such as bibingka, puto, kutchinta, espasol, maja blanca and sapin sapin. An acoustic trio will serenade guests at the beachfront.
Sands Restaurant offers themed lunch buffets on select dates from Dec. 23-30 at P850++ per person, while dinner banquets are on offer from now until Dec. 22 at P1,250++ per person. On the week of Christmas, from December 24 to 30, there will be special Christmas buffets, including the Noche Buena on Dec. 24.
Indigo, meanwhile, has prepared a four-course dinner of Chilean Sea Bass Croqueta, Jumbo Prawns, Braised US Beef Short Ribs and Classic Bomboloni, at P2,200++ per person inclusive of suggested wines, and at P8,500++ for a set dinner for two inclusive of a bottle of Moët & Chandon, until Dec. 30.
Also available are Holiday Treats To Go, such as the Buche de Noel, a traditional Yule log of almond and orange cake with light chocolate butter cream; Chocolate Crinkles, a combination of espresso and couverture chocolate; Fruit Cake loaded with candied fruits and nuts in a moist and spiced loaf; and Macaroons with different flavors.
On Christmas Day, the Santarinas will make an appearance in the morning and afternoon at the Front Office lobby. A Mass will be held at 11 a.m. at the Lounge.
December in Tagaytay
This month, wake up to cool Christmas mornings at the Discovery Country Suites in Tagaytay with overnight room packages that includes wine and cheese cocktails and a country breakfast for two guests. Room rates begin at P6,000++ for weekdays, while room rates for December 24, 25, 30 and 31 start at P 12,000++.
Restaurant Verbena offers a five-course menu that includes foie gras for lunch or dinner for the entire month at only P 2,500+ per person. The menu features Seared Scallops Salad with Baby Greens, Citrus Vinaigrette, Grilled Artichokes and Sweet Potato & Bacon “Agnolotti with Sage Cream, Speck for starters. This is followed by Pan-Roasted Seafood with Cranberry Beans and Basil Pistou and Braised U.S. Angus Beef Short Rib with Port Wine Sauce, Horse Radish Gnocchi, Carrots, Mushrooms, and Chestnuts for the main course. End the meal with Hazelnut & Orange Cake (Caramel Oranges, Rosewater Crème Chantilly) paired with coffee or tea. Those who avail of the menu will receive a complimentary foie gras treat.
Goldilocks treats as gifts
Goldilocks has come up with holiday products for Christmas parties, which can also be given as presents to friends and family, such as the Season’s Best-themed greeting cake and the Chocolate PB Banana Supreme Specialty Cake by JudyAnn Santos-Agoncillo. Ensaymada and Cinnamon Hugs make for sweet presents, or you can arrange a pastry bouquet made up of Cherry Macaroons, Muffin Bites, Fruit Cake Bites, Brownie Bites, and Caramel tarts for officemates, colleagues, and friends.
Sugarleaf launches photo contest
Sugarleaf has launched a year-long photography competition with the theme “Healthy Is So Cool!”
“We’ve done much in encouraging more and more people to eat and live healthily. Aside from our signature healthyummy menu offerings, we’ve also made organic and natural foods the platform of our store Healthy Choices by Sugarleaf where customers purchase ingredients and prepare their own healthy meals for their loved ones at home. We’ve also organized numerous talks, seminars and workshops educating people on the value of eating healthily,” co-owner and head of marketing and business development Angelo N. Songco said.
“Healthy Is Cool” is aimed to showcase how easy it is to sustain a healthy lifestyle whether you’re a busy office worker; a student eating out with friends; or a homemaker cooking up treats for the kids,” he said.
Just take a photograph and/or mini-video of yourself, family, friends enjoying Sugarleaf’s menu or preparing a healthy dish at home using a camera, mobile, laptop or computer and post it on Sugarleaf’s Facebook page SugarleafPH. Alternatively, print the photograph and submit to either Sugarleaf store in Makati or San Juan with your name and contact details.
A panel of judges comprised of friends from the media, Healthy Choices partners and the Sugarleaf team will select a set of winners every month who will be rewarded with P2,000 worth of restaurant vouchers and/or workshop admissions. Out of the 12 monthly winners selected, two will be selected as photo of the year and will be rewarded on Sugarleaf’s anniversary with over P20,000 worth of Sugarleaf and Healthy Choices vouchers and workshop admissions.
