Taxing online stores a good move or not? Netizens react
MANILA, Philippines -- The Bureau of Internal Revenue's (BIR) plan to run after online stores that do not pay taxes has elicited various reactions from Filipino netizens, with some calling it a good move and others saying it is "absurd."
Many netizens criticized the agency after BIR chief Kim Henares announced on Wednesday that they will now go after online businesses to boost tax collection next year.
Henares said the BIR has to start monitoring the taxes being paid by the online selling community, especially now that the number of online transactions is continuously growing.
She added that the agency needs to level the playing field of online businesses with those who actually have physical stores.
Like actual stores, online stores should also give receipts, either electronically or manually, to their customers, Henares said.
Twitter user FerRie Yu said, "BIR: they want to charge taxes to Online Stores in the PH. Absurd!"
'Use taxes properly'
Other social media users, meanwhile, hinted that they approve of the BIR's plan. But the agency should first make sure the taxes it will collect will be properly used, they said.
Likewise, Dexter Rapliza Casalan posted, "Then I hope the taxes will be properly used.."
"Just improve your collection procedures," netizen Gerald Santos said.
Twitter user @gracemirandilla also said, "First, make tax payment easy & efficient."
Ivy Krabye posted on Facebook: "Tax is good para maging legal lahat mga transactions.
