PNP's euro money still in Russia
Two months after retired police comptroller Eliseo dela Paz was held in Russia, the Philippine National Police (PNP) still has not recovered the P6.9 millions worth of undeclared euros confiscated from Russian authorities.
"Hinihintay pa rin po ng PNP ito at si General dela Paz nga po ay naghihintay din (The PNP is still waiting for the money and General dela Paz is also waiting for it)," police spokesman Chief Superintendent Nicanor Bartolome told radio dzMM.
Bartolome said if the PNP fails to recover the confiscated money from the Russian authorities, dela Paz would be forced to pay for it.
The police spokesman reiterated that the money confiscated from dela Paz at the Moscow International Airport last October 11 was part of the PNP's budget.
"This P6.9 million was cash advanced by dela Paz complete with documents," Bartolome said.
Asked about the Russian report on the "shameful" experience of dela Paz, Bartolome said the PNP still has not heard from the Russian authorities.
He said the PNP is doing the necessary coordination with its counterparts in Russia to obtain the investigation's documents.
Bartolome explained that the PNP cannot compel the Russian customs authorities to provide them a copy of the investigation's report.
"We can only request. We can make proper coordination with concerned agencies," he said.
Dela Paz, whose retirement came while attending an Interpol assembly, was held by customs authorities in Russia while checking in for a flight back to the Philippines for possession of the undeclared amount.
Also held in Russia were PNP chief Director General Jesus Verzosa's wife and military academy classmate, retired Director Jaime Caringal.
The Senate committee on foreign relations headed by Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago had recommended the criminal prosecution of dela Paz and other police delegates to the Interpol for graft, malversation of public funds and violation of the anti-money laundering law and banking rules.
