Firecracker-related injuries top 1,000

MANILA, Philippines – The number of firecracker-related injuries has breached the 1,000 mark, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said on Thursday.

The NDRRMC said as of 6 a.m. Thursday, there have been 1,130 cases of firecracker-related injuries recorded in the the entire country, with 390 coming from Metro Manila and 740 coming from the following regions:

  • Ilocos Region – 273
  • Cagayan Valley Region – 47
  • Central Luzon – 133
  • CALABARZON – 91
  • MIMAROPA – 13
  • Bicol Region – 24
  • Western Visayas – 45
  • Central Visayas – 18
  • Eastern Visayas – 4
  • Zamboanga Peninsula – 50
  • Northern Mindanao – 4
  • SOCCSKSARGEN – 9
  • Cordillera Administrative Region – 23
  • Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao – 6

Two children, 7-year-old Stephanie Nicole Ella and 4-year-old Ranjelo Nimero, died due to indiscriminate firing.

The suspect in Nimero's death has been arrested, while justice remains elusive for the family of Ella.
