MANILA - The Department of Education is open to changing the academic calendar for elementary and high school but said the proposal needs further study.

In an interview on DZMM, Education Secretary Bro. Armin Luistro believes there is "wisdom" on the step taken by universities to shift the opening of classes to August or September.

Luistro said this is rightly according to ASEAN 2015, where there is a consensus to change the academic calendars to August or September.

However, with elementary and high school levels, there is not enough student mobility that may push DepEd to move their opening of classes.

"Tiningnan namin ang mga bagyo at saka mga baha, para naka-spread out siya sa iba't ibang buwan, may mga malalakas na bagyo rin tayo sa September, October hanggang December,"Luistro said.

"Para sa DepEd, titingnan po namin kung ano ang magiging development sa higher education. Bukas po kami r'yan."

The DepEd Chief said there is no urgency to implement the change in school opening nationwide.

Luistro does not have any plans to move it this coming June.

"Kung gagawin namin ito, baka gagawin namin ito gradual, baka by next year," he said.

If the change in academic calendar pushes through, there will be classes on April and May.

Malacanang also expressed its support but said it will leave the decision to Congress. Report by Radio DZMM
