DILG conducts 'unity walk' for peaceful elections
MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Sunday conducted a "unity walk" and interfaith prayer rally for a safe and peaceful elections in May 2013.
The event, dubbed “Unity Walk for Secure and Fair Elections (SAFE) 2013,” was attended by thousands of government employees and non-government organizations.
The unity walk started at Camp Crame in Quezon City going towards the DILG headquarters in EDSA all the way to the Quezon Memorial Circle.
“Bahagi ng ating demokrasya, ang halalan ang pinaka-sentro ng pagbabatid ng ating mga kababayan ng pananaw,” DILG Secretary Mar Roxas said. “Kaya sigurado dapat na ito’y ligtas at tunay na tinig ng ating kababayan ang siyang mailabas dito sa halalan.”
“Lahat ng mga ahensya na kabahagi sa paghahatid ng mapayapa at ligtas na halalan... Ang buong gobyerno ay mag-iisa, nagkakaisa para maihatid natin itong ligtas na halalan,” he added.
Justice Secretary Leila de Lima and Public Affairs Office Chief Percida Acosta also attended the "unity walk."
The government agencies also signed a "unity pledge" during the program.
Election period in the Philippines started on January 13 and a total gun ban is currently being enforced in the country. -- Report from DZMM
