Amid concerns time may be running out for automation of the 2010 elections, Senate Finance committee chair Edgardo Angara has filed a bill appropriating P11.3 billion as budget for an automated election system.
Senate bill 2984 provides P9,959,710,000 for acquisition of machines for the 2010 automated national and local elections, and P1,342,090,000 for preparatory activities for the said polls, for a total budget of 11,301,790,000 pesos.
Angara said the appropriation will "ensure an informed, free, orderly, honest and credible election that is reflective of the will of the filipino electorate."
Technically, all revenue measures emanate from the House of Representatives. But to speed up the process, the Senate conducts simultaneous budget hearings with the lower House. -- by LYNDA JUMILLA, ABS-CBN News
