Palace can't suspend officials till end of election period
MANILA, Philippines – Now that the 120-day election period has begun, the Office of the President is already barred from imposing administrative suspensions against elected government officials, Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr.
The prohibition, however, does not benefit Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia, who was suspended administratively by the Office of the President last December 2012.
Brillantes said this is provided under election laws.
However, he clarified that the Office of the Ombudsman is not covered by that prohibition. Any suspensions for criminal offenses filed with the Ombudsman may still be imposed.
