MANILA, Philippines – If President Benigno Aquino III were given any more power, said a Filipino on social networking site Twitter, he would beat any comic book superhero.

However, another said any measure to curb high power rates would be welcome.

These posts on social networking sites were in response to a proposal to give Aquino “emergency powers” to address the issue of high power rates.

On December 23, the Supreme Court (SC) issued a 60-day temporary order to halt Meralco from implementing its controversial power rate increase, which the company has attributed to a spike in generation charge.

The increase was met by uproar from consumers, who said the price hike is not in their best interest.

Legislators have also urged the SC to expand its temporary restraining order to include generation companies supplying power to Meralco, as the company attributed its increase to a spike in generation charge.

While politicians wrangle over the fine points of emergency powers and whether it should be given to the President, netizens assert that focus would be better put elsewhere.

On the TV Patrol Facebook page, netizens were mostly against the measure.

Joan Pitogo said history shows such measures do not work: “Hindi po ako pabor dahil kung hindi naman pala mganda ang naidulot nito nung panahon ni late President Ramos, bakit pa gagwin ulit.”

Ramil Macapagal also said he is against giving Aquino emergency powers, as it may be used for personal interest. “Wala din nmn mangyayari, baka gamitin pa sa personal na interes iyang emergency power niyan. Ang dapat nilang gawin, tanggalin na iyong mga bulok na nakapwesto diyan sa lipunan natin.”

“Iyan ang makakapagangat ng bansa natin. Bilyon ang nawawala sa atin taon taon kaya dapat iyon ang unahin muna, hindi puro propaganda lang na alam naman natin walang silbi,” he said on Facebook.

In Happysmile Dildig’s opinion, the government and power companies should always put the people first whatever it may decide to do: “Walang brown out dapat. Nakakasira sa mga gamit. At low low ang bayad sa kuryente. Maawa sa mga taong bayan.”
