SC defers decision on pleas to stop Corona trial
MANILA, Philippines - The Supreme Court on Tuesday said it has deferred a decision on the petitions to stop the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona.
Supreme Court Spokesman Jose Midas Marquez said the Court consolidated all 5 cases and ordered respondents to file their comments in 10 days.
He said Corona inhibited himself in the cases.
The five petitions were separately filed by tax informer Danilo Lihaylihay; former Integrated Bar of the Philippines president Vicente Millora; lawyers Vladimir Cabigao; Oliver Lozano; and the group of Homobono Adaza and Allan Paguia.
Almost all the petitions cited the lack of verification, saying 188 complainants from the House of Representatives signed the impeachment complaint without reading it.
For their part, Adaza and Paguia said the Senate abused its discretion when it accepted the “unverified” complaint and set the impeachment complaint for trial.
