Imelda to visit GMA
MANILA - Ilocos Norte Rep. Imelda Marcos said yesterday she intends to visit former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, whose continued detention at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC) in Quezon City she described as “inhuman.”
“This (detention) is no longer about justice, this is about life,” Marcos said, adding Arroyo should be allowed to undergo treatment for her degenerative bone disease afflicting her spine. “This is inhuman, she could die anytime.”
Arroyo is detained at the VMMC for the alleged plunder of funds of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office. Her lawyers maintained that the case was weak and have repeatedly sought bail for her before the Sandiganbayan.
Marcos said Arroyo has not been convicted and yet the government refuses her bail.
She said the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos granted the appeal of late former senator Benigno Aquino Jr. to leave for the US to seek medical treatment even if he was already convicted for sedition.
She said she accompanied Aquino to the airport and tapped the services of a doctor to accompany him to the US.
Marcos said she was disappointed that Arroyo was not being allowed to “fight for her life.”
