DOTC to release new license plates in February
MANILA -- New license plates that have advanced security features and a new alphanumeric design will be released in February, a Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) official said Wednesday.
In an interview with dzMM, DOTC Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya said there was a backlog in the issuance of plates from September 2013 to January 2014, causing the delay in the release of the new plates.
The solution to the backlog will be addressed by their new supplier, the DOTC secretary said.
"Sa stickers, problematic po tayo diyan kaya tinap na po natin ang NPO, the government printing office and hopefully, ang gagawin po nila dyan is mula November hanggang Enero, at yung Pebrero po sa bagong supplier na po," Abaya said.
Although there would be no more stickers required for the new license plates, stickers for windshields will still be given.
"Niliitan din po namin [ang sticker sa windshield], pina-perforate ito. Kumbaga, inaalis na lang annually ang bahaging ito, so hopefully lower cost kasi mas maliit na area na lang ang sinasakop ng sticker. Pero kailangan pa rin otherwise walang ibang paraan para malaman kung updated ang rehistro ng isang sasakyan kundi pigilan at tingnan ang papeles nito," Abaya said.
MV plates, the DOTC said, will now have a 3-letter, 4-number combination, and MC plates will have a 2-letter, 5-number combination.
Private vehicle plates will also come in a black-and-white design, with a look similar to those other countries such as Singapore and parts of Europe. -- report from Pia Regalado, dzMM
