Comelec need not OK candidates' interviews

MANILA, Philippines - The Commission on Elections will revise its rule on the media guestings of candidates during the campaign period.

Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr. told ANC the poll body will issue a clarificatory resolution that will only require TV and radio stations to inform them about guestings.

Earlier, the Comelec said stations should first get permission from the poll body before candidates can appear on their shows.

"The wording is prior approval. We're now saying prior notice lang for monitoring purposes, which means just tell us. May i-interview-hin kaming ganito or we have a program like this, so that we can watch kung talagang yung programang yun will really be on the current issues, political kwan o hindi talaga political propaganda," he said.

The Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas, however, still sees a problem even with the revised rule.

"Bagama't ganun, yung notice pa rin, merong chilling effect pa rin yan eh. Whether we like it or not, that you require a media outlet to even give notice of what it is doing is a chilling effect on the freedom of the press. Let Comelec do its work," said KBP legal counsel Rejie Jularbal.
