Bishops want back-up plan on automated polls

MANILA, Philippines – Even the country’s religious leaders are Doubting Thomases on the first-ever computerized elections.

In a pastoral statement entitled “A Call for Vigilance and Involvement,” the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines sought for a contingency plan in case the automated polls fail to avoid a potential political crisis.

The bishops acknowledged that the Commission on Elections is pulling all stops to make the automated polls a success but also pointed out that “at this late hour, there are still many questions” whether the Comelec and the electorate are ready for a modernized polls.

Thus, “we must make sure that there are prepared fall back positions that can be quickly adopted when there are some glitches in the system and in the logistics. We have to be vigilant and be involved. One example would be to help in educating voters regarding the AES and in using the equipment,” the prelates said.

The bishops held their first plenary for the year the previous week which they concluded this Sunday. It was also the first time that CBCP president Tandag Bishop Nereo Odchimar presided over the assembly.

The bishops also cited the “serious questions” on the reliability and integrity of the machines that would be used in the elections which they also noted “have not been satisfactorily answered.”

Concerns have been raised on the credibility of the winning consortium that bagged the contract to automate the polls. Smartmatic, the main supplier of the machines, has been involved in alleged election anomalies in the United States and Venezuela.

Critics also raised the possibility that system could be manipulated.

The Comelec is pushing ahead in automating the elections nationwide amid concerns that massive glitches could cause a nationwide failure of elections, resulting to a leadership vacuum.

It does not help that the poll body’s election preparations have been revised many times, further heightening fears that the automated polls may fail.

You learned men of faith of

You learned men of faith of the CBC--- you must know that you have responsibilities which do not include meddling in the country’s politics much less on poll automation (leave that to the IT experts) and who, we, the people, should not vote for. Why don’t you advise your flock to exercise diligence, morality, integrity, honesty and absolute faith in our God who is the only source of good in our life? There must be some way to encourage people to learn God’s Words by studying the Bible. Stop giving us your self-serving version of the reproductive health bill and encourage our masses to understand responsible parenthood. We didn’t hear much about what you did to help victims after Ondoy – where were you? And what are you doing for the street children; for parents who can’t even feed – much less – send their 10 children to school; for families who rely on pag-pag, garbage for their daily sustenance? Why don’t you advise your flock (the media) to stop believing in and propagating “feng shui”, faith healers, fortune tellers. You, of all people, know what the Lord, through the Scriptures, say about all these.

I agree with Joma and

I agree with Joma and Counterforce. These self-righteous and holy-kunuhay people MUST back off from mingling in the states affairs. The coming election as is now is like a circus show, bishops should not add up to it.

Politicians must also stop courting this group for its endorsement. Bakit ano palagay niyo sa mga Catholic faithfuls, mga anga anga na kesyo sinong kandidato ang gusto ng kurakot na obispo nila e sya ring iboboto ng mga tao? After cardinal Sin, these priests are no more than nuisance to the political scene in this country.

These bishops and priests are incompetent, corrupt, liars, deceivers. VERY unholy. STOP giving them so much media exposure. Lumalaki lang ang mga ulo ng mga to.

These people must also pay taxes. Ang dami kaya ng nakokolekta nila everyday.

Is this a NEWS?

Journalism 101:
Lahat ba ng internal activities ng Catholic Church ay kailangang ibalita? Ano naman ang human interest dito?

Im just curious on how people think

Amen !

I suggest that the CBCP/bishops pray really hard like real christians do. Prayers..has been and always the best way to solve problems. You bishops should know better that man cannot rely on other men. It is always through the divine that we seek solution and never in our own hands unless we have already lose the Faith. Bishops..i ask you to whom do you rely ? From the very order that you have vowed or to men that you scorn in everyway ?? You can start by praying for our leader and our country. Amen.

back off, priest

keep your dick off and focus on what you do best - spreading ignorance base on jesus myth.

we have enough pest in this country, we dont need more.

Perennial Doubters

These bishops always have to have their say in everything are given too much importance by media. They are irrelevant. There is no such thing as a catholic vote so I don't understand why politicians are climbing all over themselves to court this group for endorsements. Many bishops are wholly incompetent to talk about topics outside of their training and a number of them are outright liars and deceivers in their attempts to sway their flock.

If in case there will be sabotage in computerized Philippine election, i think at least a plan for manual polls should be prepared.
