Cayetano accepts Gigi Reyes' apology
MANILA, Philippines - Senate Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano has accepted the apology of Atty. Gigi Reyes, Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile's chief of staff whom Cayetano attacked in a privilege speech for calling him a hypocrite, but he does not see himself reconciling with Enrile anytime soon.
"Sa akin, wala naman 'yon eh," Cayetano told reporters on Thursday, referring to his spat with Reyes. "Walang ill will sa akin. No need for an apology."
Cayetano said that in politics, his enemies today can be his allies tomorrow.
Asked, however, if he sees himself patching up with Enrile anytime soon after their bitter word war on the Senate floor, Cayetano replied, "Only God knows."
He said he's open to reconciliation and forgiveness, but that all apologies must be set aside until the issues, particularly on the use of Senate funds are resolved.
It's hard to bear grudges against anyone, Cayetano said. "It's stressful enough to be a public official. To put hate in your heart will destroy you."
Cayetano also clarified that he did not link Enrile and Reyes romantically, or even insinuated that they were having a relationship. He said the issue merely "took a life of its own."
